Françoise-Thérèse de Choiseul-Stainville, a young French aristocrat who has become a princess of Monaco by marriage, has been in prison for months awaiting trial before the Revolutionary Court - which could see her condemned to the guillotine. Could the sudden arrival in her cell of writer Louis-Sébastien Mercier, who had dreamed of "the most peaceful and happy" revolution, be a sign that she is to escape that cruel fate?
