Donizetti's "La Favorite" in Monaco

Young tenor Juan Diego Florez will play the role of Fernand from 12 to 15 December 2013

Gaetano Donizetti wrote "La Favorite" in 1840.

Despite a reserved reception on the first night, this work marks the high point of Donizetti's presence in Paris – he was the most performed composer in the capital between 1835 and 1845.

La Favorite would be performed 700 times at the Opera until 1918, a time when the vocal requirements of the score and changes in audiences' taste in favour of verismo and Wagnerian repertoires would plunge him into relative obscurity.  Other countries, such as Italy and Spain, retained the Italian version of this majestic work in their repertoire.

Juan Diego Florez has chosen to play the role of Fernand in Monte-Carlo.  The role was originally written for Gilbert Duprez, who portrayed Arnold in Rossini's William Tell.

This role, which is the prerogative of the greatest bel canto tenors, represents a major step forward in the Peruvian tenor's career.
