Two school pupils commit the same offence. But their teacher punishes only one and lets the other off, as he just happens to be his nephew. Nobody could fail to see the unfairness. But is there truly a human feeling that enables us to recognise justice and injustice? And if such a feeling exists, is it innate? Or is it shaped by social mores, varying according to era or society? Does justice not have objectively identifiable traits? What is certain is that in all the history of philosophy, thinkers have sought as much to define it as to find arguments showing the very exercise to be impossible.
