Leningrad was created
over 20 years ago by its charismatic leader, Sergey Shnurov, and is now Russia's
most popular band. According to one
biographer, Maxim Semelyak, the essence of this musical project is based on
three principles: "Humour,
stupidity and social critique." To say that the band's launch in the early 2000s, with its
thunderous ska-punk rock, astounded Russian society, would be an understatement.
