Despite a rocky start, Madame Butterfly would eventually become one of the most beloved of all operatic works. It speaks to us today with as much force as a century ago. To our early-21st century sensibilities, it is a tale of the inequalities born of imperialism, the predation by adults of economically fragile adolescents, the abandonment of mothers and daughters by "passing" sires, or the clashes between cultures and religions that speak different languages.
Beyond this tempting politicisation, Madame Butterfly remains the most poignant of stories: moved by the purity of her romantic feelings, Cio-Cio San remains blind to the signs that foretell Pinkerton's betrayal. Is it a blindness understandable in a girl of fifteen, or rather a refusal to look reality in the face caused by past trauma?
