Marianne, a young woman in an arranged marriage to powerful Neapolitan judge Claudio, dreams of pure, true love, while honouring her wifely duties. But Coelio, her cousin-in-law, is in love with her. He confides in his friend Octave, a Bohemian, cynical ladies man. Octave agrees to plead his case with the young woman. However, rejects all advances. Though she is beyond reproach, he husband nonetheless threatens her. She get her revenge, she decides to take a lover, and a dangerous game begins between Marianne, Coelio and Octave.
Alfred de Musset's romantic drama, published in 1833 and performed for the first time at the Comédie Française in 1851, is adapted here by Pascal Faber with a painstakingly constructed set and sober, flickering lighting that maintains a constant sense of tension.
