"THUS FATE KNOCKS AT THE DOOR"
When Beethoven's Fifth Symphony was first
performed, the reactions of the artists of the time speak for themselves: "Beethoven's music opens up the
empire of the colossal and the immense" (E. T. A. Hoffman).
"It's very big, it's absolutely crazy!
" (Goethe).
The great originality of this symphony lies
in the initial motif of four notes - three short notes followed by a long one. Beethoven is a real musical strategist, developing
and articulating his symphony around the omnipresence of this motif.
In the four movements, he expresses a
conflict between an oppressive external element (this famous motif that
everyone is free to interpret in their own way but that Beethoven explains as "destiny
knocking at the door") and Man.
He brings an unprecedented dramatic
dimension to symphonic music, to which is added an autobiographical dimension.
This unique and impressive monument
continues to thrill generations of music lovers around the world.
After the concert, a free bus service to
Monaco will be provided by the Friends of the Orchestra.
