Amica at the Monte-Carlo Opera

Pietro Mascagni's work is being performed on two more evenings in the Salle Garnier

Amica has become an absolute rarity.  However, when it was first created, it was a huge success with both audiences and critics.

When the work was performed at the Monte-Carlo Opera, conducted by the composer, audiences rushed to see it from all over Europe.

The Italian première (with a new libretto in Italian) was performed at the Teatro Constanzi in Rome two months later.  Although it was well received, this domestic tragedy, which tells the fateful story of rivalry between two brothers who love the same woman, then fell into obscurity.

Pietro Mascagni's only opera with a French libretto is set in the mountains and is bitter and passionate.  Never have opera and cinema been more alike than at the turn of the 20th century.

Amica's obvious cinematic overtones - a new concept of what is natural;  its length, which is similar to a feature film;  a concise, contemporary story (the action takes place in Savoie in around 1900) and the lack of an interval make Amica an opera that appeals to today's audiences.
