"LAC", choreographical performances by Les Ballets de Monte-CarloFrom Friday 23 to Monday 26 April 2021, at 2 pm Grimaldi Forum Monaco - Salle des Princes

Audiences often associate Swan Lake with its second Act, a veritable monument of the classical repertoire, so powerfully identifiable from its choreography, white-clad dancers and of course Tchaikovsky's iconic score. In that respect, Act II of Swan Lake might be considered one of the first ever abstract ballets, one to be savoured without thought to the story being told.

LAC by Jean-Christophe Maillot once again makes the narration the focal point of the piece. In this ballet, all is dark, complicated, and rich with meaning... It was the idea of Tchaikovsky himself to write a symphonic ballet about a human creature whose metamorphosis would make all love impossible. The genesis of this swan, inspired by Green, Nordic and Russian mythology, makes it a thrilling hybrid.

One can only applaud the initiative. This Lake is a grand moment of dance, an almost lyrical flight that forfends neither understatement nor nuance. It will no doubt remain a dazzling memory for all who experience it (…).

FIGARO MAGAZINE (2013)

In collaboration with Jean Rouaud, Jean-Christophe Maillot returns to the torments of a tale inspired by our childhood fears and night terrors. Those buried experiences are exhumed here, thrust into a Macchiavellian family context that serves as a backdrop for a ballet that is all about light and darkness. The transformation from animal to human raises profound questions about our very nature. We believe our ability to make choices sets us apart from the animal kingdom. But are we truly capable of them? Are we not all, ultimately, as lost as the Prince? Jean-Christophe Maillot shows us torn between black and white, good and evil, candor and eroticism... Perhaps our very humanity ultimately lies in that frustrated insatiability that defines us from the moment we utter our first cry - We want it all!
